Fault-finding on the PowerPC G3 iBook is laid out here by symptom, from Apple's Service Source for the clamshell iBook and iBook (FireWire), and from Apple's 2001 troubleshooting articles for the iBook (Dual USB). Apple's rule for its charts: try the cures in order, test after each, and refit the original part before moving on.[1][2]

Resets

[edit | edit source]
  • Power manager: with the computer off, press the reset button, wait five seconds and press the power button. On the clamshell the button is above the power button; on the Dual USB it is above and to the right of the A/V port. Check afterwards that the button has not stuck under the top case. A power-manager reset erases a RAM disk and the date and time.[1][2]
  • Forced restart: hold Command-Control and the power button.[1]
  • PRAM: press the power button, then hold Option-Command-P-R until the startup chime has sounded a second time.[1]

The clamshell iBook has no backup battery, so changing the main battery with the machine asleep and no adapter connected loses the contents of memory.[1]

Power

[edit | edit source]
Symptom Apple's order of cures
Will not power on (Dual USB) Remove peripherals; known-good outlet, adapter and cord; remove the battery; reset the power manager; disconnect the keyboard and restart; remove extra RAM and the AirPort Card; known-good DC board; check the power button connection (top case); logic board[2]
Runs on the adapter but not on battery Reset the power manager; reseat the battery; known-good charged battery; then the charging board (clamshell) and the logic board[1][2]
Runs on battery but not on the adapter Reset the power manager; known-good adapter; check the ring of lights around the power port (amber or green on the clamshell); replace the DC-in board (DC board on the Dual USB), then the logic board[1][2]
Battery will not charge Reset the power manager; on the clamshell, insert the battery for 15 seconds and remove it, four or five times; known-good battery; charging board connection, charging board, logic board[1] A very flat Dual USB battery may need at least 30 minutes on the adapter before it is recognised[2]
Charges only when asleep or shut down (clamshell) Use the correct 45 W adapter[1]

On the clamshell, the ring around the power socket glows amber while the battery charges and green when it is full.[1]

Startup beeps

[edit | edit source]
Beeps Meaning Action
1 No RAM detected Swap the slot module for a known-good one; if the beeps continue, or if no module is fitted, the logic board
2 EDO memory in the slot Fit compatible SDRAM; if the beeps continue, the logic board
3 No RAM bank passed As for one beep
4 Bad boot ROM (on the logic board) As for one beep

Source: Apple's charts for both models, which send a beeping machine with no module fitted straight to a new logic board, because the remaining memory is soldered to it.[1][2]

Display

[edit | edit source]
Symptom Apple's order of cures
No picture, computer otherwise running Connect the adapter; raise the brightness with the Fn key pressed and not pressed; restart; reset the power manager; check the display and inverter cables at the logic board; inverter board, display (clamshell)[1] Dual USB: check the backlight and LVDS cables, then the display assembly and the logic board[2]
Backlight dark or very dim Brightness setting, backlight cable, display and inverter cables, pinched or cut cables, inverter board, display, logic board[1]
Very light or white display Start from CD to rule out software; check cables; inverter cable, display cable, display[1]
Rows of pixels always on or off Display cable connection, display cable, display, logic board[1]
Display latch will not hold or release (Dual USB) A faulty hook means a new display assembly; a faulty latch or button means a new top case[2]

Apple ran an iBook Logic Board Repair Extension Program for display problems on G3 iBooks from January 2004, extended in June 2004 to all white G3 iBooks.[3] The program has long ended, and Apple's own charts end display faults on the white models with the display assembly and then the logic board.[2]

On the clamshell, displays stored in heat and humidity can develop "vinegar syndrome".[4]

Keyboard, trackpad and drives

[edit | edit source]
  • No response from the keyboard: reset the power manager, boot from the system CD, reconnect the keyboard cable; then the keyboard and the logic board.[1]
  • Trackpad button has no effect (clamshell): reset the power manager; with the top case off, press the trackpad button on the charging board with a nylon tool. If that works, check how the top case is seated; otherwise the charging board, then the button actuator in the top case.[1]
  • Cursor erratic (Dual USB): clean the trackpad with the machine off; reset the power manager; try running on battery, and if that cures it, replace the adapter; check the trackpad cable under the RAM shield.[2]
  • Hard disk does not spin (clamshell): connect the adapter, disconnect USB devices, check the drive cable (pull it up evenly so the pins do not bend), then the cable, the drive and the logic board.[1]
