The Apple Workgroup Server 7250 is a desktop file server that Apple introduced on 26 February 1996, sold as the Workgroup Server 7250/120. It is built on the Power Macintosh 7200 with the 120 MHz PowerPC 601 board, and Apple services both in one manual. With the Apple Workgroup Server 8550 it replaced the NuBus-based Workgroup Servers with PCI models.[1][2][3]

Server bundle

[edit | edit source]

Apple offered three software bundles, each with 16 MB, a 2 GB 4500 rpm hard drive, an 8× CD-ROM drive and System 7.5.3:[4]

Workgroup Server 7250/120 configurations
Order number Bundle Main software
M5482LL/A Applications Server Solution Apple RAID, FileWave, netOctopus, Virex, Retrospect Remote (DAT configurations), Now Contact and Up-to-Date, 4-Sight FAX, Skyline/Satellite
M5483LL/A AppleShare Server Solution The above plus AppleShare 4.2.1, Apple Remote Access MultiPort Server and Server Manager
M5484LL/A Internet Server Solution Apple Internet Server Solution CD (WebSTAR, PageMill, MacDNS, NetCloak and others) and Apple RAID

Differences from the desktop model

[edit | edit source]

The WS 7250 uses one logic board version, with the 120 MHz processor, and Apple notes that it needs no auxiliary processor fan.[2] Apple's standard configuration for the WS 7250/120 is the 120 MHz 601 with 16 MB of DRAM, a 1.2 GB or 2 GB hard drive, an AppleCD 600i or 1200i drive and 1 MB of soldered VRAM; the 7200 models came with 8 or 16 MB and a 500 MB or 1.2 GB drive.[2]

The Service Source gives the WS 7250 a wider line voltage range than the 7200: 100-270 V AC against 100-240 V AC, both "automatically configured". The same page says the power supply has two voltage settings, 115 V and 230 V, and must be set to 115 V in the United States.[2] Check the supply's voltage setting before connecting a machine of unknown history.

Specifications

[edit | edit source]
Workgroup Server 7250/120 (Apple)
Item Figure
Processor PowerPC 601, 120 MHz; built-in FPU and 32 KB cache; 256 KB level-2 cache
Memory 16 MB standard; four DIMM slots for 5 V, 64-bit, 168-pin fast-page DIMMs, 70 ns; 256 MB maximum; no memory soldered to the board; no interleaving
Video 1 MB VRAM soldered; one VRAM DIMM gives 2 MB, three give 4 MB (112-pin, 70 ns)
Storage 1.4 MB SuperDrive; 2 GB hard drive; AppleCD 600i or 1200i
Expansion Three PCI slots
Ports SCSI (DB-25), ADB, two serial (GeoPort), AAUI-15 and 10BASE-T Ethernet (one at a time; 10BASE-T takes priority), DB-15 video, sound in and out
Electrical 100-270 V AC, 50-60 Hz; 150 W, not including the monitor
Size and weight 6.15 × 14.37 × 16.93 in; 22 lb

[2][4]

The Service Source and the data sheet print the height as 6.5 in but give 15.6 cm, which is 6.15 in, the height on Apple's specification page.[2][4][1]

The DIMMs need no pairing, but two DIMMs of the same size give no speed gain because the board does not interleave memory.[2] Kaiser notes that the 7200, 8200 and WS 7250 have no processor upgrade slot, and that Sonnet later made a G3 card for them that fits a PCI slot.[3]

Known faults

[edit | edit source]

Apple's symptom charts include a fault specific to some 7200 and WS 7250 machines: the system will not power off unless an attached external 1.2 GB hard drive is switched off, or an LED stays lit after power-off while that drive is left on. It affects serial numbers CK634 to CK637, XB634 to XB637, SG634 to SG637 and FC634 to FC637. Unplug the machine, take out the internal hard drive and check the label on its 50-pin SCSI connector; replace drives labelled "1280S p/n TM12S012" and "REV 02-B". Apple notes that only revision 02 drives cause the problem.[2]

Maintenance and repair

[edit | edit source]

The WS 7250 is serviced from the Power Macintosh 7200 Series/WS 7250 Service Source, which covers its take-apart, symptom charts and upgrades.[2] The clock battery is a 3.6 V lithium cell.[1] For general methods see Capacitor Failure Symptoms, Hard Drive Maintenance and Repair and Battery Explosion, Capacitor or Corrosion Damage.
