Fault-finding on the PowerBook 1400 series starts from Apple's symptom charts and startup flowchart in the Service Source, which work at module level: try the cures in the order listed and test after each.[1] The charts cover all six models; where a cure differs between the active-matrix 1400c and the passive-matrix 1400cs, Apple says so.
Install the battery before connecting the adapter; Apple's take-apart instructions require it.[1]
Check the main battery with a meter set to read 14 V DC. A fully charged NiMH battery reads 14 V, and the computer shuts down at 12 V.[1]
Apple gives no test for the 45 W adapter; its advice is to try a new adapter if the computer will not run on the existing one.[1] One owner traced a dead adapter to a break in its cable, which showed as a voltage that changed when the cable was moved.[2]
To reset the power manager, turn the computer off and hold the reset button on the back down for 10-20 seconds; repeat three or four times if it does not restart. Resetting PRAM (Command-Option-P-R after the startup sound, held until the sound repeats) resets the power manager as well, and clears any RAM disk and most control panel settings.[1]
A computer without enough power to start gives only the click of the power button.[1]
Hold the reset button down for 10-20 seconds and repeat three or four times; then try a known-good adapter and battery; connect the adapter and restart after 3-4 minutes; replace the logic board[1]
Blank screen, no response
Backup battery; battery; adapter; power manager; connections; keyboard; logic board
Apple's order: the reset routine above; restart; remove adapter and battery and restart after 3-4 minutes; check the adapter cable; try a known-good battery and adapter; reset the power manager; check all logic board cables; replace the keyboard, logic board[1]
Power manager; contrast; connections; inverter; display; logic board
If the sleep light is blinking and the machine is not asleep, reset the power manager. Insert a floppy and press Command-E to confirm the machine is running; adjust contrast and brightness; check the display, inverter, trackpad, keyboard and logic board connections; connect the adapter; replace the inverter board, display, logic board[1]
Connect the adapter; disconnect external SCSI devices; check the cable; reinitialise with Hard Drive Format; replace the drive, the cable, the logic board[1]
1 GB drive shows about 750 MB
Factory formatting on the 1400c/117 (M4856) and 1400c/133 (M5576)
Back up, start from the PowerBook System CD, reinitialise with Drive Setup and restore the software[1]

Run Apple's PowerBook 1400 HD Updater; the data is not at risk[1]
Floppy drive in the media bay does not work
Disk; cable inside the drive case; drive; logic board
Try a known-good disk; check and replace the floppy cable inside the drive case; replace the drive, the logic board[1] See Floppy Drive Repair
CD-ROM drive does not accept or mount a disc
Disc; seating; drive
Replace the disc; reinsert the drive in the bay; replace the drive[1]
Make sure the computer is not asleep; clear the slot; use a straightened paper clip in the hole beside the slot; check the card; replace the PCMCIA eject mechanism[1]

Slot; card; eject mechanism; logic board
Try the other slot; replace the card, the eject mechanism, the logic board. Modem and communication cards may not appear on the desktop[1]
Infrared does not work
Window; board seating
Clean the infrared window; check that the infrared board is seated; replace the PCMCIA eject mechanism[1]
Power manager; trackpad connections; trackpad; keyboard; logic board
Shut down, remove the adapter and battery and wait a minute; reset the power manager; check the trackpad, keyboard and logic board connections; test with a low-power ADB mouse; replace the trackpad or keyboard, then the logic board[1]

Surface; connections; trackpad
Use one finger pointing straight down; clean the surface with the computer off; check connections; replace the trackpad, keyboard, logic board[1]

TheMightyMadman: after replacing the surface-mount electrolytics on the mainboard, control switch board and LCD board, the original adapter gave only a click and a backlight flash; its output varied when the cable was moved; 3lectr1cPPC: probably a break in the cable; the same supply design as the 5300's sometimes needs recapping. Community repair report.
↑68kMLA forum thread "Powerbook 1400 green light with no main battery", February 2025. doctormistral: machine kept without a main battery; after unplugging, the green light comes on and stays on, draining the backup battery; needs the reset button to start again. Community report, unresolved.
