Macintosh Performa 630: Difference between revisions
Rewrite on Apple's spec sheet and the 630 Series Service Source: battery is 4.5 V alkaline per Apple (5.4 is a misprint; vinegar, not bicarbonate); one ADB port, not two; configurations from Apple's product configuration pages; symptom charts; Commons photo of an actual Performa 630; drop uncited bundle claims |

The Macintosh Performa 630 is the consumer version of the Macintosh LC 630 and Macintosh Quadra 630, a low-profile desktop Macintosh with a 33 MHz 68LC040 that Apple introduced in July 1994.[1] Apple's specification sheet dates it 1 July 1994; EveryMac and Wikipedia give 18 July 1994.[1][2][3] The base Performa 630 has no CD-ROM drive; the Performa 630CD adds one. EveryMac lists the 630 at US$1,500 (order number M3423LL/A).[2]
Apple's Macintosh Performa 630 Series Service Source covers the Performa 630, 630CD, 631CD, 635CD, 636, 637CD and 638CD.[4]
Performa 630 series configurations

The manual's title page also names the 631CD but gives no configuration for it.[4] The Performa 640CD DOS Compatible is covered by the LC 630/Quadra 630/Performa 640 Service Source.[5]
Specifications
[edit | edit source]| Item | Specification |
|---|---|
| Processor | Motorola 68LC040 at 33 MHz; 32-bit registers, address and data buses[4] |
| RAM | 4 MB built in; 36 MB maximum on a logic board with one SIMM slot (part 661-0158), 52 MB on a board with two (661-1114: one ordinary slot and one single-sided slot)[4] |
| ROM | 1 MB[4] |
| Video | 1 MB DRAM frame buffer, not expandable; up to 16 bits per pixel on Apple 12- to 14-inch monitors, the 15-inch multiple-scan and VGA (640 × 480); up to 8 bits on the Apple 16-inch and SVGA (800 × 600)[4] |
| Drives | 1.4 MB SuperDrive, manual insert; 250 MB IDE hard drive; optional AppleCD 300i Plus. Internal SCSI hard drives are not supported[4] |
| Ports | Two RS-232/422 serial (mini DIN-8); one external SCSI (DB-25); one ADB (mini DIN-4); DB-15 monitor port on the video daughterboard[4] |
| Sound | 8-bit mono input (microphone or line level, with bias current for an electret microphone); 8-bit stereo output, 16-bit in CD mode, 0.5 V RMS into 39 ohms, front and rear jacks[4] |
| Slots | 114-pin LC processor-direct slot; 112-pin communications slot; 60-pin video-in slot; 10-pin TV tuner port[4] |
| Controls | Soft power from the keyboard; front-panel volume buttons; optional infrared remote[4] |
| Electrical | 100-240 V AC, 50-60 Hz; 45 W maximum, not including the monitor[1][5] |
| Size and weight | 10.95 × 41.95 × 32 cm; 7.7 kg (17 lb) without CD-ROM drive, 8.6 kg (19 lb) with[4] |
The Performa 630 Series volume prints the maximum power as "5 W, not including monitor"; Apple's specification sheet and the LC 630/Quadra 630/Performa 640 volume give 45 W.[4][1][5] The same volume says the external SCSI port takes up to six devices in its specifications and seven in its general information.[4]
Hardware
[edit | edit source]Low End Mac describes the 630 family as the first desktop Macintoshes with an IDE hard drive; the CD-ROM drive, when fitted, is SCSI.[6] Apple says IDE drives must be replaced like for like, and that the IDE drive does not affect SCSI IDs or termination.[4] The logic board slides out of the back once the plastic I/O door is removed, and the drives come out from the front after the drive bezel.[4]
The 68LC040 has no FPU; Low End Mac notes that one can be added by fitting a full 68040 in its place.[6] Apple's upgrades were the Macintosh Processor Upgrade, a PowerPC 601 card with a 256K cache card that lets the machine switch between the 601 and its 68LC040, and the Power Macintosh 5300/6300 logic board upgrade with a 100 MHz 603e.[4]
Battery
[edit | edit source]Apple's specification sheet gives the battery as 4.5 V alkaline, and Low End Mac agrees.[1][6] The Service Source names no battery part and no test voltage. Its symptom charts tell the technician to "Unplug 5.4 battery, wait 20 seconds, plug in battery, and restart computer"; "5.4" is a misprint for 4.5, which the LC 630 volume prints for the same step.[4][5] Fitting the Processor Upgrade involves lifting the battery and turning it a quarter turn on the board.[4] Leakage from an alkaline pack is neutralised with a weak acid such as vinegar; see Battery Explosion, Capacitor or Corrosion Damage.
From Apple's symptom charts
[edit | edit source]| Symptom | Apple's cures, in order |
|---|---|
| Eight-tone error chord at start-up | Reseat the SIMMs; replace the SIMMs; replace the logic board[4] |
| Four-tone error chord at start-up | Disconnect the hard drive power cable and restart (if normal, test and replace the drive); disconnect the floppy cable and restart (if normal, replace the floppy drive); replace the logic board[4] |
| Screen completely dark, fan not running, LED off | Check the power connections; the machine powers on only from the keyboard, so try a known-good keyboard; reseat the logic board; unplug the battery for 20 seconds; check the monitor has power; remove cards and peripherals; replace the power supply, then the logic board[4] |
| Menu bar flashes or the system keeps beeping | Check the front-panel buttons are not jammed; reseat the drive bezel and front panel control board[4] |
| Crackling sound outside play-through mode | Audio Volume Extension 1.1 or later; replace the logic board[4] |
| Rattling at start-up with the Apple External Video Connector | Fold the external video cable away from the fan blades[4] |
The start-up chords and Sad Mac codes are on Sad Mac Error Codes.
