Per-machine service manuals
[edit | edit source]Apple published a Service Source volume for almost every Macintosh. Over a hundred are hosted and indexed at Apple Service Source; machines without their own article, such as the Macintosh Portable and the Twentieth Anniversary Macintosh, are listed on Maintenance Guides. The Service Sources are module-level manuals: they give Apple's specifications, symptom charts, take-apart procedures, battery thresholds and adjustments, but no schematics or component values.
General and third-party Macintosh books held here
[edit | edit source]The books below are not service manuals and carry no schematics, parts lists or component values. They record what a machine shipped with, how it was meant to work, and what owners were told at the time.
The Macintosh Bible
[edit | edit source]Arthur Naiman and contributors, Goldstein & Blair (Peachpit Press from the fourth edition), Berkeley. Four editions are hosted: 1st, 1986 (435 pp), 2nd, 1988–89 (771 pp), 3rd, 1991 (1,126 pp) and 4th, 1987–92 (1,262 pp). The fourth edition says that once a Macintosh Portable's batteries fall below 5.4 V they cannot be recharged; Apple's service manual gives the pack as sealed lead-acid, 6.5 V.

- Under the Apple 1987: Howard Bornstein, 1987, 363 pp, on Macintosh desk accessories.
- The Color Mac 1992: Marc D. Miller and Randy Zaucha, Hayden, 1992, 333 pp, on colour design and production.
- The Power Mac Book 1995 (Ron Pronk, Coriolis, 1995, 411 pp) and The PowerPC Macintosh Book 1994 (Stephan Somogyi, Addison-Wesley, 1994, 241 pp), on the move to PowerPC.
- The Tao of AppleScript 1993: Derrick Schneider for BMUG, Hayden, 1993, 311 pp.
- The Great Macintosh Easter Egg Hunt 1998: David Pogue, Berkley Books, 1998, 140 pp. A catalogue of hidden messages in Apple hardware and software; its copyright page describes it as unauthorised. It is the source for several ROM oddities on Macintosh Old World ROM.

- Macintosh XL Screen Kit: Apple, 1985, part number 030-1240-A, 28 pp, for the Macintosh XL.
- Programming with AppleTalk 1991: Michael Peirce, Addison-Wesley, 1991, 278 pp, which treats AppleTalk as a network as well as a programming interface.
- Programming The Laserwriter 1991: the PDF is not hosted.
